Lessons Learnt
• SDN brings programmability & virtualization to optical transport

• Improves network efficiency, but simpler operation is the real
opportunity
• Basic standards and protocols are there, but require further work
• Definition of open interfaces (esp. north, east, west) is crucial
• AVDA Optical Networking is actively engaged in ONF, ODP, IETF
to drive further evolution

Extending SDN to transport enables true end-to-end provisioning of data flows.

Lessons Learnt • SDN brings programmability & virtualization to optical transport • Improves network efficiency, but simpler operation is the real opportunity • Basic standards and protocols are there, but require further work • Definition of open interfaces (esp. north, east, west) is crucial • AVDA Optical Networking is actively engaged in ONF, ODP, IETF to drive further evolution Extending SDN to transport enables true end-to-end provisioning of data flows.
