In India, khadi is not just a cloth, it is a

Gandhi.The Khadi Movement aimed at

Indian goods, thereby improving India's
economy. Mahatma Gandhi began
promoting the spinning of khādī for rural
self-employment and self-reliance (instead
of using cloth manufactured industrially in
Britain) in 1920s India, thus making khadi
an integral part and icon of
the Swadeshi movement.
In Bardoli 1921 through to 1922, Gandhi, launched a protest movement against various policies
initiated by the British Government. In India's history this protest movement by Gandhi is

love."
Manav Sadhana - In 1990, a team of young volunteers,
inspired by Gandhian values, began gathering under
the branches of a tree in the Gandhi Ashram every
Saturday to play with street children. They provided
the children with a nutritional meal and taught them
about basic hygiene by cutting their nails and bathing
them. This activity quickly came together into a full
time endeavor working to brighten the future of
underprivileged children.
Today, from a quiet corner in the Gandhi Ashram, Manav Sadhna serves more than 8000
children and women through more than 35 projects. We also indirectly touch the lives of many
more individuals through our healthcare and educational support projects. The projects are
created based on the needs and participation of the community.
Sabarmati Ashram - True, indeed, that
wherever Gandhi stopped has become a place
of pilgrimage and wherever he roamed has
become a sanctified place. The Sabarmati
Ashram in Ahmedabad, so named after the holy
river Sabarmati, situated on the river’s banks, is
such an example. This site no longer functions as
a working ashram but as a museum and an
institution whose aim is to preserve and
propagate the legacy of the Mahatma.
9
Hundreds of visitors, both foreigners and
locals, with curiosity and feelings of
devotion arrive here and feel inspired and
enlivened. More than half a million visit
here every year. The Sabarmati Ashram is
a source of inspiration for the present
generation, and will serve as such for the
generations to come. Indeed, Gandhi’s
ideals will serve as a beacon light for all
generations. The Ashram has stood
witness to many important happenings,
happenings which were instrumental in
shaping the Karmavir Mohandas into the
Mahatma and the Father of the Nation.

House. Post lunch visit Raj Ghat and National Gandhi Museum, and if time permits visit
the Qutab Minar.
Delhi, the Empress of Indian cities has a fascinating history and a
stimulating present. She has often been sacked and desolate. But
she could not be despoiled of the incomparable situation that
marks her for the metropolis of a Great Empire. The capital of
India, Delhi has been the seat of power of a number of dynasties
– the Rajputs, the Afghans, the Turks and the Mughals who
continued their imperial line until the British. Scattered over are
surviving ruins, remnants of mighty edifices, tombs of warriors
and saints, which in an impressive sense of magnificence are
memorials not of a single city but of supplanted nations.
After breakfast, visit the Raj Ghat with Arun and Tushar
Gandhi. This is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, a beautiful
sacred black
marble platform that marks the spot of Mahatma
Gandhi's cremation one day after his assassin-
ation and then to the National Gandhi
Museum which showcases the life and principles of
Bapu.
In the afternoon, visit to the Gandhi Smriti,
housed in the Old Birla House on 5, Tees January
Marg, New Delhi, is the sacred place
where Mahatma Gandhi's epic life ended on 30
January 1948. Mahatma Gandhi lived in this house
from 9 September 1947 to 30 January 1948. Thus, the hallowed house treasures many
memories of the last 144 days of his life.
18
The Old Birla House was acquired by the Government of India in 1971 and was converted into
a National Memorial of the Father of the Nation and was opened to the public on August 15,
1973.
Preserved at Gandhi Smriti are the rooms where Mahatma Gandhi lived and the prayer ground
where he held a mass congregation every evening. It was here where assassin’s bullets felled
Gandhiji. The building and the landscape have been preserved as they were in those days.

20
Day 15 (15th December): Trip to Agra Taj Mahal
After an early breakfast at the hotel, the
group will leave for Agra by bus (approx 4
hrs drive, one way). Arrive Agra and
proceed to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.
Lunch will be at a local restaurant. Later,
the group will drive to Delhi International
Airport to board flight back home. No
dinner this evening.
Visit the Taj Mahal. With its incredible lacy
white grandeur the Taj Mahal is perhaps
the most perfect architectural monument in
the world. To the poet Tagore it was a `tear on
the face of eternity’. In memory of his wife the
great Mughal emperor Shah Jehan
constructed this most extravagant
and incomparable monument built for love.
Amazingly graceful from any angle, it is the
close up detail, which is really astounding.
Agra Fort is situated on the banks of the River
Yamuna, another monumental mission accomplished by the great Mughal visionary Emperor
Akbar. His son Jehangir and grandson Shah Jehan added to this imposing structure during their
rule. The palaces, mosques and audience halls
contained within its massive wall of red sandstone are
perfect examples of blending Islamic and Hindu
traditions.
Agra, the city known for the famous monument of love –
the Taj Mahal. The Mughal Emperor, Shah
Jehan, constructed Taj Mahal. It is said he built this
monument in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaj
Mahal. The Taj Mahal is ethereal at any part of the day
– blushing in the rosy glow of dawn or sunset, appearing
21
like a pearly mirage in the moonlight or reflected in the pools of the garden. Perhaps the most
moving view of the Taj is from an octagonal tower in the Agra Fort further along the river
Yamuna.
There are very few cities in the world that can match the history and heritage of Agra. Located
at a distance of 204 km south of Delhi, Agra is the single most famous tourist destination of
India. Situated on the west bank of River Yamuna, Agra is a part of the great Norther Indian
plains. The architectural splendor of the city is reflected in the glorious monuments of medieval
India built by great Mughals who ruled India for more than 300 years.
In the mid 16th century and earlier 17th century Agra witnessed a frenzied building activity and
it was during this time when the symbol of love Taj Mahal was built. The buildings made during
this era were purely in the contemporary Mughal style and of very high quality, which is still
reflected in whatever monuments remain in Agra.

Lifescapes of Gandhi Tour 2015

  • 1. 1 New Lifescapes of Gandhi Tour 2015 December 01, 2015 - December 15, 2015 Day 01 (1st December): Arrive Mumbai, India Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is the primary international airport in Mumbai, India. The Airport's IATA code – "BOM", is derived from Bombay, Mumbai's former name. The airport is South Asia's second busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic and the busiest airport in India in terms of international passenger traffic and the second busiest in terms of overall passenger traffic. Upon arrival at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, proceed to immigration, customs clearance and luggage collection. Continue to the exit where you will be met and transferred to The Ramee Guestline Juhu Hotel, check-in after 2:00 pm. We will have the opportunity to walk the streets of Mumbai and drive through the more modern city, seeing the Taj Hotel, the Gateway of India, the University of Mumbai, and the Court House. You can see the British influence in the architectural design which displays a mini-version of Big Ben in a part of the Court House structure. We catch the sun setting down over the Arabian Sea. Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Post lunch visit Raj Ghat and National Gandhi Museum, and if time permits visit the Qutab Minar. Delhi, the Empress of Indian cities has a fascinating history and a stimulating present. She has often been sacked and desolate. But she could not be despoiled of the incomparable situation that marks her for the metropolis of a Great Empire. The capital of India, Delhi has been the seat of power of a number of dynasties – the Rajputs, the Afghans, the Turks and the Mughals who continued their imperial line until the British. Scattered over are surviving ruins, remnants of mighty edifices, tombs of warriors and saints, which in an impressive sense of magnificence are memorials not of a single city but of supplanted nations. After breakfast, visit the Raj Ghat with Arun and Tushar Gandhi. This is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, a beautiful sacred black marble platform that marks the spot of Mahatma Gandhi's cremation one day after his assassin- ation and then to the National Gandhi Museum which showcases the life and principles of Bapu. In the afternoon, visit to the Gandhi Smriti, housed in the Old Birla House on 5, Tees January Marg, New Delhi, is the sacred place where Mahatma Gandhi's epic life ended on 30 January 1948. Mahatma Gandhi lived in this house from 9 September 1947 to 30 January 1948. Thus, the hallowed house treasures many memories of the last 144 days of his life.
  • 18. 18 The Old Birla House was acquired by the Government of India in 1971 and was converted into a National Memorial of the Father of the Nation and was opened to the public on August 15, 1973. Arrive Agra and proceed to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Lunch will be at a local restaurant. Later, the group will drive to Delhi International Airport to board flight back home. No dinner this evening. Visit the Taj Mahal. With its incredible lacy white grandeur the Taj Mahal is perhaps the most perfect architectural monument in the world. To the poet Tagore it was a `tear on the face of eternity’. In memory of his wife the great Mughal emperor Shah Jehan constructed this most extravagant and incomparable monument built for love. Amazingly graceful from any angle, it is the close up detail, which is really astounding. Agra Fort is situated on the banks of the River Yamuna, another monumental mission accomplished by the great Mughal visionary Emperor Akbar. His son Jehangir and grandson Shah Jehan added to this imposing structure during their rule. The palaces, mosques and audience halls contained within its massive wall of red sandstone are perfect examples of blending Islamic and Hindu traditions. Agra, the city known for the famous monument of love – the Taj Mahal. The Mughal Emperor, Shah Jehan, constructed Taj Mahal. It is said he built this monument in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is ethereal at any part of the day – blushing in the rosy glow of dawn or sunset, appearing
  • 21. 21 like a pearly mirage in the moonlight or reflected in the pools of the garden. Perhaps the most moving view of the Taj is from an octagonal tower in the Agra Fort further along the river Yamuna. There are very few cities in the world that can match the history and heritage of Agra. Located at a distance of 204 km south of Delhi, Agra is the single most famous tourist destination of India. Situated on the west bank of River Yamuna, Agra is a part of the great Norther Indian plains. The architectural splendor of the city is reflected in the glorious monuments of medieval India built by great Mughals who ruled India for more than 300 years. In the mid 16th century and earlier 17th century Agra witnessed a frenzied building activity and it was during this time when the symbol of love Taj Mahal was built. The buildings made during this era were purely in the contemporary Mughal style and of very high quality, which is still reflected in whatever monuments remain in Agra.
