3. Celebrating 30 years of Excellence
Why AAPI?
With the increase in ethnic and cultural diversity and the radical changes in healthcare in the
United States, a group of concerned medical professionals founded the American Association
of Physicians of Indian Origin in 1982. The formation of the organization started as a fireside
discussion in Detriot, Michigan with a simple goal to work for a level playing field for the
international medical graduates.
AAPI was forged in the midst of challenges that physicians of Indian Origin have faced due
to cultural barriers and bias against international medical graduates. Those barriers created
obstacles for immigration and licensing opportunities. Today, the organization is a dynamic
body, spearheading legislative agendas on healthcare and influencing the advancement of
ethnic medical organizations.
National Reach Through Local Chapters
AAPI serves as an umbrella organization for a network of over 160 active medical associations,
medical school alumni organizations, state and local chapter associations, and specialty
organizations. These associations are divided into 12 regions across the United States,
each with a Regional Director on the AAPI Executive Commitee who responsible for
communication and coordination of local events and activities.
