Good evening and welcome! My name is Cassandra Pruett. I am the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council Outreach Committee Chair. I am about to give you a very brief summary of some of the activities and projects EHNC is working on in the neighborhood.
This presentation is categorized into the activities of the 5 EHNC committees, which are tasked with addressing the primary areas of concentration by the EHNC.
EHNC supported and participated in a community cleanup on Aug 23, which was organized by the LAPD Senior Lead Officers. The P&B committee is working to positively influence development in the neighborhood, including working with the developers of this property, at Sunset Blvd and Fountain Ave, to improve the historic preservation project design even more, for example by adding more parking (including handicapped parking), improving the façade design, and focusing more on food and sidewalk dining than on bar use.
- Through the efforts of the P&B, the EHNC board endorsed the HBCD. Curbed LA, an online news source regarding issues in Los Angeles, wrote about this endorsement. The endorsement acts to raise awareness of East Hollywood and its cultural resources. - EHNC organized two Parking Day LA events, which promote the need for more park space in LA by transforming street parking spots into a park for a day. One event was associated with the P&B committee, and featured a pool, music, BBQ; free plants, trees, and seed preparation to be used in the community after the event; local artist selling plant arrangements, and more.
-The second EH Parking Day LA Event was associated with the A&C committee. It also promoted the need for more parks in LA, and it included art and youth activities by inviting local artists to participate, involving local school children in painting and gardening activities, and having the Recycled Movie crew and their solar powered recycling trailer participate. Recycled Movie is a mentorship program for youth film-makers funded by money made from recycling. Barnsdall Art Gallery is working to revitalize the use of the gallery by getting the community engaged. The A&C Committee, and its associated artists, will be involved in upcoming events, including an exhibit called Fluxus, taking place from Jan 28 -April 18, 2010. One artist is creating an interactive documentary called Imagine East Hollywood, about how the youth in East Hollywood envision the future of East Hollywood. The documentary will collect and display interviews, art projects, songs, poems, and other media from youth in the neighborhood. Special attention is being paid to connecting with youth in EH schools. East Hollywood ArtCycle plans to integrate its annual event with Bike Week, hosted by Barndsall Art Park during the week of March 8, 2009.
Y&E has 3 projects in the works to encourage civic and community engagement by youth in the community. These projects will act as a training ground for youth to become involved in civic and community activities. EH Junior NC program will involve 5 th graders in EH schools. Details still being worked out. EH Youth Core – Will get kids grade 6-12 involved in community volunteering. It will provide school credits and encourage the youth to run for the 2010 EHNC election. Community Curriculum Program – will focus on 1 st – 3 rd graders and aims to teach young kids about the community by having community representatives from Fire, Police, NC, and other organizations visit classrooms and give presentations.
Working on comprehensive Community Outreach Program – to help get EHNC better connected with the entire community. Adding even more features to our website, such as a community calendar (accessible by clicking on the “meetings” links on our website), community directory, and photos and videos of our activities. Creating accounts with Flickr (free online photo sharing service), and promoting our activities on Facebook (free online social networking service). We have also begun Issuing press releases about our activities. Our first press release resulted in coverage by Curbed LA on our Historic Bungalow Court District Endorsement. We are also reaching out to schools to get them involved in our activities. Mary’s Schoolhouse’s visit of Parking Day LA was one success story from this effort. EHNC will collaborate with neighboring NCs on getting the community to participate in the upcoming 2010 NC Elections. The elections will take place in March. We encourage everyone here today to participate in the election.
