I will be presenting on a Moodle Professional Development Plan
Our building is very fortunate to have what we do in regards to technology. All of the classrooms in my building have access to elmos, projectors, at least three computers, and we just recently bought 8 smart boards. However, my school lacks in our use of tools. We have access to various tools, but we don’t seem to use them. For example just recently we have access to Moodle. Not many of the teachers know about it, or the teachers know about it but they don’t use it to the extent that they could. If a teacher would integrate Moodle into their classroom, it would allow students to be able to interact with technology while also interacting and communicating with their peers.
Using a tool like Moodle allows teachers to communicate both with parents and students on upcoming assignments, newsletters (For example, uploading the document to Moodle) as well as, allowing the students to interact with their peers using a discussion board where they can reflect or collaborate on different topics or research. A teacher is also able to upload various documents (e.g. study guides, extra reading assignments, lesson plans, quizzes, etc.
When introducing this professional development I will go over what Moodle is, its purpose, and the course that this professional development will take.Moodle is a course management system that educators use to help create an online course for students.Moodle should be incorporated into every classroom, because Moodle is another way for parents and students to receive information and/or for the students to collaborate and communicate with their peers. BecauseMoodle is a hands on tool, the training would take place in a lab. Each teacher would have their own computer and log in so that they are able to use their own Moodle. I will use a computer that is projected onto a screen so that they can see what I am teaching them. I will teach them four functions of Moodle (blog, discussion board, attaching documents, and making a quiz). After I teach one function of Moodle, the teachers then will be able to practice using that function. Do to Moodle having so many functions Moodle would be an ongoing Professional Development with teachers learning several functions each time. The first function that the teachers will learn is how to blog, then how to post discussion forums, followed by attaching documents, and lastly how to create a quiz
When a teacher uses Moodle they have the option to Blog each day. The Blog can be used to give updates, post assignments along with their due dates, as well as, adding an activity (e.g. notes, lessons, quizzes etc.)I will first demonstrate how to formulate a blog. Here you will see that I have blogged about the students’ multiplication packets and their due date. Once the teachers have seen how to formulate a blog they will then be given the opportunity to formulate their own.
Teachers can also use Moodle as a way for students to collaborate and reflect on assignments and/or topics using a discussion board. Using a discussion board is an active method of learning. When using a discussion board those students that are quiet in class are able to give insight on a topic/ discussion without feeling that everyone is looking at them. I will first demonstrate how to add and use a discussion board. Here I have posted a discussion forum about our next unit in reading being informational text. I am wanting to gauge what my students already know about informational text. Once the teachers have seen how to formulate a discussion board they will then be given the opportunity to make their own discussion forum.
Another benefit of Moodle is that the teacher has the ability to attach documents. Some teachers may attach notes that were taken in class, study guides, lessons, and so forth. I will first demonstrate how to attach a document. Here I have given a brief synopsis of the attached document. I have informed both the parents and/or students about an upcoming Test that they will need to study for. I have uploaded the Introduction to Science Study Guide. Once the teachers have seen how to attach a document they will then be given the opportunity to attach their own document.
Another feature of Moodle is that teachers have the ability to make quizzes. Making a quiz gives students quick feedback (e.g. if they got the question right or wrong and why they got it wrong), as well as, teachers not having the extra work of grading them. I will first demonstrate how to make a quiz since there are many features that can be used when designing a quiz. For example, it can be timed, or if a student gets the question wrong they can try again. Here you will see that I have formulated a Scientific Method Quiz. When students open the quiz they will then begin to take the quiz. Once the teachers have seen how to make a quiz they will then be given the opportunity to make their own quiz.
After completing the professional development teachers will be able to create a blog, formulate a discussion board, attach documents, and assess students learning by creating quizzes. Teachers will be able to incorporate these Moodle features right away into their classroom.
