1. Can you sell a dog to a pet shop?
On One Hand: It Depends on the StoreWhether or not a pet store will buy your dog depends on the
store. Most large chains will not buy a pet directly from you, but some will allow you to place an ad
through the store. You may be able to work out a deal with a locally owned pet store that will sell
your dog on consignment.
On the Other: There Are Other OptionsPet stores are not the only places people look to find a new
pet. Put an ad in your local paper or online, but be honest about why you can no longer keep your
dog. See if there is a no-kill shelter in your area that will find a home for your dog.
Bottom LineCheck with the owner or manager of
your local pet store to find out its policy on
buying dogs. If the store is not willing to buy your
dog, try to sell your dog directly to its new owner-
--or give the dog away for free. The focus should
be on finding your dog a healthy, happy home.
