A Slow Food Experience
with Cape Town as Gateway
Why a slow food tour experience?
The aim of this unique tour is to offer participants an authentic
experience based on the Slow Food concept of eco-gastronomy - a
recognition of the strong connections between plate and planet!
The destinations selected by Kontrei.co.za were chosen because they
can produce a food experience which is good, clean and fair. The food
eaten will taste good; it is produced in a clean way that does not
harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and the food
producers receive fair compensation for their work.
The Slow Food Tour starts in Cape Town in the Fairest Cape kontrei
(region), and then leads to the Klein Karoo, to Knysna on the Garden
Route, Swellendam and the Overberg kontrei and via the Southern tip

of Africa to the Boland and back to Cape Town.
On the first day the tour group goes on a guided walkabout in Paarl in
the historic center of the town around the guest house, with dinner at
an historic wine estate to sample local Boland food and wine from the
estate.
A highlight of the Slow Food tour is a two-day visit to the historic
Malay Quarter in the Bo-Kaap. This part of the tour includes visiting a
private home in the area for a full spread lunch with live traditional
music, as well as experiencing tha baking - and tasting! - of a
traditional milk tart.
The group also takes part in a historical
adventure into the food and culture of the
Cape Malay, and follows the cook from the
spice shops to the butcher.
The following two days are spent in the
Klein Karoo kontrei with accommodation on
a working ostrich farm and nature reserve.
Included is a guided walkabout for
indigenous flora to link up with a meerkat
(fauna) excursion.
The food on the farm comes from their own
organically produced ostriches, springbok
and sheep, as well as alfalfa sprouts in
salads, herbs, pomegranates, quinces, figs,
olives and wine.
Optional extras during this part of the trip are to visit to the world
famous Cango Caves and to buy ostrich leather products.
Next is the drive via the Outeniqua Mountains down to the lush

indigenous forests of the Garden Route with stop-start viewing en
route to Knysna. Optional is a lunch of fresh oysters from the lake.
The visit here includes an interactive dinner and cook demonstration
at a distinguished local cooking school operating a permaculture
experience.
Next the tour group visits the Overberg kontrei, with an optional extra
of lunch en route in Albertinia, at a typical small town hotel where
traditional food recipes stayed with the family over 2 generations.
Arriving at historic guest house in Swellendam, the group, will later
enjoy a traditional Overberg dinner with family recipes cooked by your
hostess.
The last part of the Slow Food Tour follows the
Overberg Whale Coast towards Arniston, where
the group will lunch with the women of the
Arniston-Waenhuiskrans fishing community at
Kassiesbaai.
Then follows a visit to the Southern tip of
Africa, travelling along the coastal route via
Kleinbaai, Gansbaai, Hermanus and Gordon's
Bay back to the Paarl Winelands.
Here the group will learn about the founding
and development of the most recent language
from Africa, Afrikaans. At a farewell party tour
members will be welcome to enjoy the unique Paarl Rock Brandy
which is produced specially and in limited quantities for your hosts at
Zomerlust Gastehuis.
