• Use of mobile phone is pervasive both in rural and in
urban areas
• Text messaging is common in Malawi
• Encouraged by the use of mobile phones for health
programs in other countries – Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania,
Mozambique and South Africa

Objective:
Assess the effects of using mobile text messaging on FP
service uptake
Measures of Program Effects: Percent change in: (i) Number
of FP visits to the health facilities; (ii) Number of FP
clients; (iii) CYP

• Four districts to be selected for the study
– 2 for intervention
– 2 for comparison
• Intervention:
– Develop and deliver text FP messages/invitations to current FP
clients and their friends/colleagues whose numbers are available
– Messages to be developed by C-Change and Health Education Unit
of the Ministry of Health, Malawi
– Mobile numbers and messages to be made available to mobile
providers who will send messages at agreed intervals
