Editor's Notes

  1. Good evening, name’s Tony. Here to talk about Web 2.0. Mostly a lot of hype, but also some really easy things. Hopefully I spark some ideas… and we can discuss them.
  2. Before going much further… I prepared some resources for you. They’re on my blog. This talk is on my blog. Just like Web 1.0 there’s a lot to learn and if you expect to learn all the details tonight…. Well just going to be a long night. So hopefully we can keep this talk to mostly brainstorming about where the value is and if anyting strikes you as important I’ve provided enough info for you to get started with the technology.
  3. I had this really strong sensation while working at O’Reilly that there were too many important things to learn and that I really needed to quit my job in order to have time to learn all of them. And after going to to several conferences and being absolutely immersed in cutting edge I found that basically with every round of excitement there were only one or two things that were going to be immediately useful or that could change my opportunities.
  4. And there is a lot of opportunity inside of Web 2.0. I’m not sure if anyone’s heard of Wikipedia or even heard of a wiki. Well wikipedia is basically a completely free online encyclopedia. Many companies have spent tons of time and money putting together encyclopedias. Wikipedia was formed in only a few years and didn’t pay for any of their content. That’s because they started with a wiki and let anyone add an entry or edit an entry. I edit entries all the time. It’s a trend, if you make it easy for people to contribute…
  5. Internet Maps aren’t new. And they’ve always been useful. But then google came along with maps that would scroll right on the page. No page reloading. And you could display data and popups. This was powered by a new use of Javascript that people are calling AJAX. Hard!
  6. But then google decided to give away their maps for free and made it very easy for people to build on top of. Now anyone can have a scrolling map with clickable points that pop up their own data. This is from a site called housingmaps.com
  7. Because of blogs you don’t even need to be that technical to take advantage.
  8. There’s plenty of themes and technologies that people are excited about. But there’s only three that really get me excited. These are the three that have immediate application. And they’re easy.
  9. Architecture of participation means “how do I make a site that people want to contribute to.” In the old days in order to have a site you needed to make all the pages yourself. And you needed to find something to put on each page.
  10. For example O’Reilly pays authors to write articles and pays editors to edit those articles and pays copy editors to rid those articles of spelling and grammar mistakes. It’s expensive and you have to get a lot of advertising just to make ends meet.
  11. But in the Web 2.0 world users give it to you for free. Sounds like a fair tale world?
  12. Back to O’Reilly. The right hand column is all blogs. That bloggers wrote for free. They get as much traffic as the articles and don’t cost anything. Why would someone want to write for O’Reilly? Prestige? Exposure? Self-interest?
  13. Odeo has been paying a support specialist to respond to every support email that we get. In that model, every problem requires time from our support rep. But what about the people who don’t write in? We’ve just switched support to happen on a public message board. Now when our support rep responds everyone can read. More participation, even if it’s silent.
  14. This is the PHP documentation. Every page lets visitors add comments. Mostly the comments are advice and additions related to the documentation. In this page 2/3 of the users
  15. Participation happens when people are motivated. Web 2.0 just recognized that there were more motivations than money.
  16. So it’s easy. That’s always one of my requirements.
  17. Odeo moved our support system.
  18. All of Odeo’s intranet documents are on a wiki. That somebody else hosts. Nobody sat down to say what should be on the wiki. It just appeared. Usually when somebody was frustrated by lack of information. Heard about a company holiday too late, BAM. Holidays are on the wiki.
  19. So why did Google give away their maps. People tend to distrust things that are given away for free because they don’t understand why and assume they’re being taken advantage of somehow. Well, you’re not. You reusing another companies product is good for them.
  20. My blog had pictures now. Is flickr thinking they should make a business out of charging people to put pictures on blogs? No. They know there business is to get people to store as many pictures as possible. This is just advertising and value.
