Slavery
North Atlantic slave trade
• In 1498 Vasco de Gama, a Portuguese explorer became the first
  European to sail around Africa .
• After his voyage trade between Africa and Europe increased
  rapidly .
• Slavery was common at the time, slaves were usually criminals
  or prisoners of war and could be from any race
• The Atlantic slave trade lasted from 1600 to 1850 .
• Manufactured goods such as cotton, guns are sent to Africa in
  trade for slaves .
• At least 20 million people were taken from Africa to the
  Americas , Caribbean ,Europe and other countries .

Slavery in canada
• 1629 -Olivier Le Jeune an eight year old boy, becomes the first
  slave transported directly from Africa to New France.
• 1793-Upper Canada passes the Act Against Slavery on July 9,
  Existing slaves would not be freed, but no new slaves could be
  brought into the province and children of female slaves would
  be freed at age 25.
• 1807 -The British Parliament approves the Abolition of Slave
  Trade bill on March 25. it outlaw any further slave trade
• 1833-King William IV gives royal assent to the Slavery Abolition
  Act on Aug. 29, freeing slaves throughout the British Empire.
Slaves
• Slaves is a human being who is the property of another
  person
• When Africans were captured and shipped to the new world
  they were enslaved for their entire lives their children also
  were enslaved
• By 1600 European s had many plantation in the new world
• To exploit their new riches they needed workers .
• In turn they could get slaves in exchange for guns and textiles
In the Plantations
• Most slaves work as Field hands
• The average lifetime of a slave was 25 years
• Many slaves lasted only 7 years in the plantations
• Field hands work the hardest working 16 hours a day , six
  days a week while being supervised by their overseer
• Field hands work longer the any other slave clearing land ,
  planting and harvesting below the hot sun .
House slave
• House slaves work on the house helping the owners wife and
  family
• They work fewer hours then the field hand and usually life in
  the house
• They work as cooks , caregivers, grooms
• Most house slaves were women, children or old people .
Family life
• Slaves were forced to live together in small cabins away from
  their owners house .
• Families would live in a one room shack that had no furniture,
  plumbing, or electricity
• Most houses were simple wooden huts and some had little
  gardens
• After the slave trade was abolish owners encourage family life
• Slaves could be separated from their families when they were
  sold
Women
• Female slaves were often subjected to sexual abuse by their
  owner or overseers and it was common knowledge
• When the African women arrived in the "New World", they
  were put in auctions to be bought or sold off .These people
  who were to purchase the African women were allowed to
  inspect every inch of the women's
• The only day they would probably have off were Sundays to
  tend the children or take care of family matters.
• Working in the fields together, they would share stories with
  one another and create songs or hums to remind them of
  their homelands.
• Families were torn apart from each other causing mental and
  emotional stress.

Punishments
• Slaves had no right their master had complete rights to whip
  them and punish them
• The punishments the salve suffer was often very harsh
• On plantations power was delegated to the overseer this man
  to increased production oppressed their slaves
• The punishment used against slaves include whipping and
  some master would mutilate or brand their slaves
American civil war
• In 1860 and 1861 a group of southern states , known as the
  confederacy, withdrew from the united states
• A civil war broke down between the south and the north .
• In 1865 the union defeated the confederacy
• Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1960 .
• Abraham Lincoln proclaim the end of slavery in 1963 and
  slavery ended after the war in the southern stats
• The confederacy resented the growing economic power of the
  union and feared they would imposed reforms and end
  slavery
• despite the emancipation act the southern states pass laws
  that prevented African Americans from voting or gaining
  equal status
Ww1/ww2
• In the 20th century Canada fought in two world wars .
• Twice , Canadian soldiers wanted to shows their loyalty to
  Britain and went and fought
• Black Canadians also wanted to show their loyalty to Britain and
  Canada
• In 1906 an all black unit of 600 men called the no.2 construction
  battalion was formed . They weren't allow to fight
• In the ww2 black Canadian refused to served in segregate units.
• They fought in mixed units and help Britain and its allies win the
  war .
• Black Canadian women for the first time were allowed to
  escaped from domestic work working in factories making
  weapons .
Civil rights movement
• During the half of the 20th century black Americans fought for
  civil right .
• The civil right movement began in the US in 1960s
• In southern states black were discriminated
• Protest began in 1955 after Rosa Parks was arrested for
  refusing to give up her seat to a white men
• Non violent protest were inspired by the words of civil rights
  leader Martin Luther King
• In 1964 the US government passed a civil rights act making
  racial discrimination illegal

Human trafficking
                 modern day slavery
• Slavery is no longer legal but you can still see many cases of
  slaves all around the world .
• Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation,
  harboring and/ or exercising control, direction or influence
  over the movements of a person in order to exploit that
  person, typically through sexual exploitation or forced labor.
• The victims are mostly women and children
• Human trafficking is growing at an alarming rate in Canada
  and around the world

Slavery

  • 2. North Atlantic slave trade • In 1498 Vasco de Gama, a Portuguese explorer became the first European to sail around Africa . • After his voyage trade between Africa and Europe increased rapidly . • Slavery was common at the time, slaves were usually criminals or prisoners of war and could be from any race • The Atlantic slave trade lasted from 1600 to 1850 . • Manufactured goods such as cotton, guns are sent to Africa in trade for slaves . • At least 20 million people were taken from Africa to the Americas , Caribbean ,Europe and other countries .

Slavery in canada • 1629 -Olivier Le Jeune an eight year old boy, becomes the first slave transported directly from Africa to New France. • 1793-Upper Canada passes the Act Against Slavery on July 9, Existing slaves would not be freed, but no new slaves could be brought into the province and children of female slaves would be freed at age 25. • 1807 -The British Parliament approves the Abolition of Slave Trade bill on March 25. it outlaw any further slave trade • 1833-King William IV gives royal assent to the Slavery Abolition Act on Aug. 29, freeing slaves throughout the British Empire.

Slaves • Slaves is a human being who is the property of another person • When Africans were captured and shipped to the new world they were enslaved for their entire lives their children also were enslaved • By 1600 European s had many plantation in the new world • To exploit their new riches they needed workers . • In turn they could get slaves in exchange for guns and textiles

In the Plantations • Most slaves work as Field hands • The average lifetime of a slave was 25 years • Many slaves lasted only 7 years in the plantations • Field hands work the hardest working 16 hours a day , six days a week while being supervised by their overseer • Field hands work longer the any other slave clearing land , planting and harvesting below the hot sun .

  • 10. House slave • House slaves work on the house helping the owners wife and family • They work fewer hours then the field hand and usually life in the house • They work as cooks , caregivers, grooms • Most house slaves were women, children or old people .

Family life • Slaves were forced to live together in small cabins away from their owners house . • Families would live in a one room shack that had no furniture, plumbing, or electricity • Most houses were simple wooden huts and some had little gardens • After the slave trade was abolish owners encourage family life • Slaves could be separated from their families when they were sold

Women • Female slaves were often subjected to sexual abuse by their owner or overseers and it was common knowledge • When the African women arrived in the "New World", they were put in auctions to be bought or sold off .These people who were to purchase the African women were allowed to inspect every inch of the women's • The only day they would probably have off were Sundays to tend the children or take care of family matters. • Working in the fields together, they would share stories with one another and create songs or hums to remind them of their homelands. • Families were torn apart from each other causing mental and emotional stress. • Families were torn apart from each other causing mental and emotional stress.

Punishments • Slaves had no right their master had complete rights to whip them and punish them • The punishments the salve suffer was often very harsh • On plantations power was delegated to the overseer this man to increased production oppressed their slaves • The punishment used against slaves include whipping and some master would mutilate or brand their slaves

American civil war • In 1860 and 1861 a group of southern states , known as the confederacy, withdrew from the united states • A civil war broke down between the south and the north . • In 1865 the union defeated the confederacy • Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1960 . • Abraham Lincoln proclaim the end of slavery in 1963 and slavery ended after the war in the southern stats • The confederacy resented the growing economic power of the union and feared they would imposed reforms and end slavery • despite the emancipation act the southern states pass laws that prevented African Americans from voting or gaining equal status

Ww1/ww2 • In the 20th century Canada fought in two world wars . • Twice , Canadian soldiers wanted to shows their loyalty to Britain and went and fought • Black Canadians also wanted to show their loyalty to Britain and Canada • In 1906 an all black unit of 600 men called the no.2 construction battalion was formed . They weren't allow to fight • In the ww2 black Canadian refused to served in segregate units. • They fought in mixed units and help Britain and its allies win the war . • Black Canadian women for the first time were allowed to escaped from domestic work working in factories making weapons .

Civil rights movement • During the half of the 20th century black Americans fought for civil right . • The civil right movement began in the US in 1960s • In southern states black were discriminated • Protest began in 1955 after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white men • Non violent protest were inspired by the words of civil rights leader Martin Luther King • In 1964 the US government passed a civil rights act making racial discrimination illegal

Human trafficking modern day slavery • Slavery is no longer legal but you can still see many cases of slaves all around the world . • Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation, harboring and/ or exercising control, direction or influence over the movements of a person in order to exploit that person, typically through sexual exploitation or forced labor. • The victims are mostly women and children • Human trafficking is growing at an alarming rate in Canada and around the world
